NFL Picks Week 12
Last week, my picks did okay. Due to some surprises, I only went 6-8. Okay, lets try to recover (again) with the 15 games this week.
Fantasy football people, please note, this is the next to last week of byes! Four teams are on bye this week? This is crazy. The NFL schedule-maker is dumb. This scheduling makes no sense and less so as we go. Fantasy football playoffs are approaching, so it is time to get serious NOW!!!!
Season to date: 76-84-1 after ten weeks. I am getting better at this!
Bonus picks: 1-2 last week, 34-21 to this point. The NASCAR race went as expected, except for the finish. Bottom line, Harvick earned the championship by winning the final two races. Perhaps that is all we really wanted. Some can argue that Jimmie Johnson and/or Jeff Gordon should have been in the final four. But it think it worked out well. Based on his complete season, Harvick deserves to be champion. Now...let's see if Harvick and his team can do it again!
The final two teams with the (late) Week 11 bye:
1. Carolina (7-3): The Panthers have had a tough year.
2. Pittsburgh (6-4): The
Thursday Night Football (NFL Network/CBS): Kansas City at Oakland: Huge game! This is a game that KC must win. Denver’s surprising loss at St. Louis dropped them into a tie with the Chiefs for the AFC West lead, and the Chargers now are only one game back. Short work week, but the Chiefs will have no excuses if they lose this one. The winless Raiders are showing heart and resolve, but they cannot get that first win. The Chargers are fortunate to have escaped with a win (again). This is the first of two meetings with the Chiefs and Oakland will love to be a spoiler and hurt a rival’s chances for the playoffs. Broncos and Chargers fans will be Raider fans on this night. Rookie QB Derek Carr may be the real deal, but time will tell on that. Can this team win this game at home?
Who wins? Short and sweet…The Chiefs have almost every advantage in this game, except for having home-field. Will they look ahead to their showdown with Denver on SNF next Sunday? Yes. Should they? No. Oakland has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Still, the Chiefs have a killer running game. Oakland does not and they don’t defend the run that well. I hate to do it, but KC has too much to blow this game. QB Alex Smith is no dummy. Even smirking (meaning wannabe great) head coach Andy Reid can’t blow this…right? Yes….talk to Denver about that. Chiefs win.
Update: Then again…..after listening to Jim Rome’s comments on this game at around 245pm today….I changed my mind. (Bleep) Raider Haters! Raiders win.
Oakland 31 Kansas City 28 (OT)
Update: Wow.....anything else needs to be said.
Sunday's games:
New York Jets at Buffalo: Update: Game moved to Detroit's Ford Field on Monday at 7pm: This is a must win for the Bills and their weak playoff chances. After blowing a win in Miami last Thursday, then the snows hit the Buffalo area this week. Record snows. 6 feet-plus in one storm on Monday/Tuesday, more (possibly 1-2 feet!) coming in on Thursday night. I wasn't thinking the Jets were going to win this week, but the snow and the possible (seems more like likely) relocation and/or delay of this game changes that. And this IS a division and in-state game....you get the idea.
Who wins? The current snow situation in the Buffalo area seems to say…game is postponed to Monday night or Tuesday. Not enough time or resources to move game to Syracuse or elsewhere. This is a crazy situation. I am predicting this based on the teams without the multiple bombings of snow that has (and will) hit Buffalo this week. The Bills are still (barely) in the playoff hunt. The Jets are not. Despite their upset win last week, the Jets should not be able to win this game. But…who knows? Regardless of where (or when) this game is ultimately played, I am taking Buffalo. I must admit though, it would be a whole lot more fun (though likely less scoring) if the game occurred in the Buffalo snow. Just saying.
Buffalo 24 New York Jets 21
Cleveland at Atlanta: This game has playoff intrigue....what? Atlanta (at 4-6? WTF???) is TIED for the lead in the pathetic NFC South (currently has tiebreaker over Saints with their Week 1 home overtime win). Cleveland is in last in the AFC North, but is 1/2 game out of first (two different ways) where everyone is over .500. The winner will improve their position...the loser will fall back, unless other things happen. Atlanta is far more dangerous at home...BUT...Cleveland gets back WR Josh Gordon from a 10-game suspension today. He led the NFL in receiving yards last year despite missing 2 games last year. Cleveland has had some bad losses but they are still in this race....and a outside shot at a AFC wild-card too. Even if he is a decoy, Gordon's presence will make Cleveland that much more dangerous. Sucks to be you, Falcons.
Who wins? Honestly, no one in the NFC South deserves a playoff berth right now. But one of them will be in and get a home playoff game on wild-card weekend (no way any of these teams get a NFC wild-card). Atlanta can play well at home, but they are not invincible there. Cleveland has not been this exciting this late in a season since the franchise rebooted 15 years ago. I don't think the Atlanta D can stop Cleveland, much less a rested Gordon. This will be exciting, but Cleveland must have this win. Cleveland wins.
Cleveland 30 Atlanta 27 (OT)
Detroit at New England: Detroit is still in first? Wow. Okay, the Lions seem for real, but they are in the middle part of their annual Thanksgiving triangle of hell. They won last week, but they are no sure thing to win at home over the Bears on Thursday. This is the hardest of the three. Detroit's D is no joke. But neither is NE QB Tom Brady and friends, especially at home. Luckily for the Lions...no snow. But such may not matter. Maybe the Lions should be more worried about the Bills (and/or Jets) tearing up their field tomorrow and then having to get it ready in less than 3 days for Thanksgiving play. Good luck with that.
Who wins? After what we have seen the Pats do with different RBs and different WRs and that same old Brady all over lately, what chance does Detroit have? They have stolen several games, even away from Ford Field, that they should have LOST. But none of them were the Patriots. Detroit QB Matthew Stafford is good and will be for a while. So is WR Calvin Johnson. But...win in NE with another game on Thursday? Sorry....I will pick Detroit on Thursday...but they won't win in NE today. Sorry. Patriots win.
New England 34 Detroit 30
Green Bay at Minnesota: Green Bay is rolling. They have to keep winning to stay close to Detroit, and hope Detroit loses today and/or Thanksgiving to be there for the rematch later. Minnesota is showing heart, but we all know they cannot do but so much. Does anything else need to be said? Can the Vikings keep Green Bay from scoring 50? I have my doubts.
Who wins? Barring major injuries, Green Bay should win...and they have to since they still trail the red-hot Lions. Minnesota will fight, but Green Bay cannot look past them. Bottom line, the Vikings cannot score with the Packers, even if Adrian Peterson was here. No upset here. Packers win.
Green Bay 42 Minnesota 30
Cincinnati at Houston: Cincinnati showed a lot of folk by going to win in New Orleans to regain first place in the AFC North..barely. To make the playoffs, the Bengals must win out, I think. But Houston has D. They have DE J.J. Watt. They have playoff hopes too. The Colts are still right there. Houston is tough at home. Houston RB Arian Foster is out again. So? This game is going to be tough. Watch it.
Who wins? The Bengals got a win they weren't expected to get, but needed. They need this one too, but Houston has a defense and the offense is better than one thinks. I don't fully believe in Bengals QB Andy Dalton anyway. Sorry. I am taking the home team in a fight.
Houston 28 Cincinnati 27
Miami at Denver: Denver sucks on the road. How do you lose to the Rams???? 7 points???? WTF????? Denver went stupid last week and got burned. Now they get a dangerous Dolphins team at home. I cannot see Miami winning this game IN DENVER, but after last week.....Ouch. Miami is in the playoff race too. If the Pats lose to Detroit....oh my. This may be Miami's Super Bowl here, but this team feels they can steal one. If Denver can't score against the Rams...what will they do against a better D?
Who wins? Denver cannot blow this game at home. Another AFC loss could screw Denver in the race for the AFC top seed that they are already losing. The Raiders gave Denver a gift on Thursday...if Denver wastes that gift by losing today....KC won't waste the opportunity when they get Denver on SNF next week. Trust me, they are watching. But after last week, screw it..I am taking Miami. They can score...payback is a bitch, Denver.
Miami 30 Denver 27 (OT)
Jacksonville at Indianapolis: The Colts are in first, but are not clear for the playoffs yet. The Jags are just playing things out, but why can't they be like the Rams or others? These Colts do things the right way, but....any given Sunday.....or Monday..or Thursday...any team can win....you have seen it. How about right here?
Who wins? Yes, why not here? Because...the Colts don't look ahead of opponents. QB Andrew Luck is focused and so are the Colts. No upset here. Colts win.
Indianapolis 34 Jacksonville 28
Tampa Bay at Chicago: Chicago is having a bad year. Tampa is (barely) in the playoff race (WTF??) in the nasty NFC South. Can the Bucs steal one in Chicago? No way...right?
Who wins? The Bears suck at home. The Bucs went to broken DC and won. The Bears are not much better. What the hell.....I am taking Tampa Bay in a upset.
Tampa Bay 28 Chicago 21
St. Louis at San Diego: The Rams got a huge upset last week....one of many for these undermanned Rams. The Chargers got two gifts in 5 days. Losses by KC and by Denver. Better win this game and take advantage. If they don't.....the Chargers may want to consider shutting it down. Simple as that. Plus, these Rams are not that great outdoors...even in the sun. Sorry.
Who wins? The Chargers will not overlook the Rams like Denver did. They did beat the champs here early in the year. Those two near losses to the then-winless Raiders gave these guys a does of reality..I hope. Chargers win.
San Diego 30 St. Louis 21
Tennessee at Philadelphia: Philly needs to win this game to stay in the playoff race. Tennessee almost upset the Steelers at home. Short week on the road? No, I don't think so. This is must win-time for coach Chip Kelly and his Eagles, especially if Dallas wins on SNF.
Who wins? If the Titans had won on Monday....I would say....upset. But I am not that crazy. Eagles win again.
Philadelphia 38 Tennessee 21
Arizona at Seattle: This is the challenge for the 9-1 Cardinals. Win this game and the Cardinals are all-but confirmed for the playoffs. You know the story. Arizona coach Bruce Arians had better be Coach of the Year. Period. If Seattle loses...they may not make the playoffs, like many recent Super Bowl winners have not the following year. Worse yet, the champs must travel to SF on Thursday....good thing it is a short flight. Can the champs get it done here?
Who wins? The Seahawks are desperate. The Cardinals are relaxed and confident. Relaxed and confident are usually the ones that wins. I am taking the Cardinals. They are not going down now. This is not the Chiefs or the Jets. This may be a team of destiny. Mark my words.
Arizona 34 Seattle 31
Washington at San Francisco: We all know the QB controversy. Whatever. Can this crazy 3-7 team go West and win at the Niners' new home? Simple answer. No. My thinking is that like Seattle...the Niners must practically win out to get a wild-card. They will not blow this one.
Who wins? The Redskins did upset Dallas on the road....but RG III was NOT the QB. This team is so broken, I cannot see them winning many more games this year. They will be very screwed up going into 2015. The Niners are in trouble, but they are not done. They must be ready for Seattle at home on Thanksgiving night, but first things first. They will beat up these conflicted Washington players in a workman-like way, then move on. Niners win.
San Francisco 31 Washington 20
Sunday Night Football: Dallas at the New York Giants: Division game...division war. The Cowboys return from a well-needed bye but find themselves in a dogfight for a playoff spot. The Giants are playing for pride now...and they would love to help trip up Dallas as they try to make the playoffs. Dallas knows they must win this game to stay in the race. Period.
Who wins? The Cowboys playoff hopes rest on the bodies of QB Tony Romo and RB DeMarco Murray. If either gets hurt (again) or starts screwing up....Dallas is done. I am not confident on their health nor their ability to win on the road. I smell upset by a team with NOTHING to lose. Giants win in prime time.
New York Giants 30 Dallas 27 (OT)
Monday Night Football: Baltimore at New Orleans: The Ravens are in a dogfight in the AFC North. Everyone is within a game of first. The Saints are tied with the Falcons in the NFC South with Carolina right behind them. Both have a division rival on bye this week. The difference is that the Ravens have a winning record, and the Saints don't. WTF? The sick part is...both and/or neither of these teams might be in the playoffs as a a division winner, no matter what happens here. Yes, it is true. So true. Should we watch this game? You watch a game with QB Drew Brees and TE Jimmy Graham in it. Ravens QB Joe Flacco is pretty good too.
Who wins? The Saints has had 3 straight home games (this being the third). They choked away the first two. Baltimore is good, but the Saints are dangerous at home. There is no way in hell the Saints blow 3 straight at home with Brees still upright. I am taking the Saints here, but a tie wouldn't surprise me.
New Orleans 30 Baltimore 27
Bonus picks:
WWE Survivor Series: This is going to be a crazy PPV with a lot on the line for a lot of folk. I will be watching it on the WWE Network (via my laptop), and new subscribers can see this for FREE if they sign up before Sunday. My predicted results are below:
Team Cena beats Team Authority:
Cena will be the sole survivor
Nikki Bella beats A.J. Lee for the Divas Title: But Brie Bella will be the reason of such....and she will be the last one standing as her 30-day personal assistant thing runs out at the end of the night.
Dean Ambrose beats Bray Wyatt (by disqualification)
